Wendi
Wendi Peters visits Mount Vernon Cancer Centre
Picture: Lorraine, Dr Paul Nathan and Wendi Peters in the Chemotherapy Suite at Mount Vernon Hospital.

Wendi Peters – Coronation Street’s Cilla Battersby – has volunteered to be a patron for a £1million appeal in aid of cancer research at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.   In the summer, Wendi helped raise money for the CTRT Appeal – run by the cancer centre and supported by the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust.  Her recent encounter with cancer through Coronation Street prompted her to take a more active role.

Wendi, who lives locally in Chorleywood, said: “Many people will know that earlier this week my character was diagnosed with a malignant melanoma, a type of skin cancer. Even though this is not a real life situation for me, I was pretty shaken up by the storyline and it has given me some insight into how terrifying a cancer diagnosis must be. “It becomes even more frightening when you read the statistics. One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer and one in four of those diagnosed will die from the disease. Through getting to know staff at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, I’ve discovered that its consultants do some excellent research, so that many more people will survive in the future. It’s made me want to do everything I can to encourage people to support to the CTRT Appeal.”

Dr Paul Nathan, consultant medical oncologist and Mount Vernon Cancer Centre’s melanoma specialist, added: “I am delighted that Wendi has agreed to help us raise funds for research and to publicise the dangers of too much exposure to sun and tanning machines. Melanoma can be cured if caught in its early stages, but we need much more effective treatment for patients in whom the disease has spread. However, without financial support it will be difficult to continue and expand our groundbreaking research.”

Many thanks to Pat Jones

Mrs Pat Jones of Stevenage visited the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre on Friday 8 December to present a cheque for £2,107 to Professor Gordon Rustin, Director of Medical Oncology and Trustee of the Cancer Treatment and Research Trust. Pat - who was treated for ovarian cancer at Mount Vernon - raised most of the money from a sponsored “slimathon” during which she and her daughter, Trudi, lost a combined total of 3 ½ stone. They also organised a successful bring-and-buy sale at home helped by 11-year old granddaughter, Holly. Pat is particularly grateful to the John Lewis Partnership at Stevenage for a £500 donation and her boss, senior driving examiner, Tony Gadd, who supported her efforts by allowing her to organise a coffee morning at the test centre where she works.
